Public Lecture by Jeff Knowlton, Artist (US)

2008/08/11 - 17:00

As soon as artists began to use the computer in the 1980's, they sought to dematerialize the physical and work within pure data, trading the real world or “meat space” for the "consensual hallucination" of Gibsonian cyberspace, the virtual world. Total immersion.

Jeff Knowlton's work and research has been in the opposite direction, bringing the virtual into the real world, the concept architect Marcos Novak refers to as Eversion, the turning out of the virtual into the real world.

A comparing account of a journey performed in two different ways, as for our load on the environment: fuel consumption, air pollution and waste production. The unit of this account is the "ecological footprint". Some researchers of Kitchen Budapest traveled the distance between Budapest and Helsinki in mid-March. Some arrived in the festival Pixelache Helsinki 2008 by plane, others
by minibus. On the way they were documenting their environmental expenses, by taking pictures and making notes. For the birthday exhibition of Kitchen Budapest the project is summarized in a presentation.

Face of KIBU

Gina Haraszti

From now on, from time to time we will choose one of our researchers, who personalise with his/her (group) work, collaboration skills and partnership with the others in the lab the aims that KIBU set at the beginning.

Our present ‘chosen one’ is Gina Haraszti, visual artist at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts.

She seeks projects which both have visual qualities and be interesting from a theoretical point of view. As an artist, she is interested in the experimental aspects of new technologies, and to explore these she would like to create installations and experiments that blend art, technologies and interactivity in a playful way.

Resident Artist

Currently John Nussey is one of our resident in KIBU until mid-October.

He is a designer from the UK. He studied Product Design and Design Management. He enjoys electronics, prototyping and Interaction Design. He's recently been working with Tinker.it in London on Arduino tutorials. He's got a broad range of other interests that are all interlinked in some way, including graphic design, film, programming, photography, games development, architecture and storytelling.

Former resident artists:

Ramyah Gowrishankar

Ramyah graduated as a Communication Designer from Srishti, School of Art Design and Technology, in Bangalore, India. Her works are a curious mix of Visual Communication, Film, Interaction design and Digital media. She is a researcher of KIBU from April till June 2008.

Roberto Pansolli

David Boardman
David is a interactive media designer with transversal skills into graphic design, software programming, interface design and web applications development.

Christopher P. Baker
