As soon as artists began to use the computer in the 1980's, they sought to dematerialize the physical and work within pure data, trading the real world or “meat space” for the "consensual hallucination" of Gibsonian cyberspace, the virtual world. Total immersion.
Jeff Knowlton's work and research has been in the opposite direction, bringing the virtual into the real world, the concept architect Marcos Novak refers to as Eversion, the turning out of the virtual into the real world.

The lecture presents Kitchen Budapest, its cross-disciplinary research methodology, and how the architect's thinking can alter new media, and how this all channels back to our cities, spaces, architecture.
We will regularly organize exhibitions to present our prototypes, or projects from related institutions and connected programs.

It has been argued that it is impossible to pursue work that fundamentally challenges institutional frameworks when working with an institution, with all the historical and commercial associations that these entities are party to. On the other hand it has also been argued that, in order to challenge the fundamentals of an institutional framework, one must operate from inside.

Kitchen Budapest is offering guest researcher positions in 2008 for dedicated profesisonals, artist, engineers, interested in the convergence of new media and actual spaces, cultural experiences, new communities, and are highly motivated to create such projects in teams.
Beyond personal skills we are very much interested in team work and collaboration skills, as all projects at our lab have to be produced in teams. It is the task of the researchers to raise interest within our community and get others on board.
Live coding is the process of writing software in real-time as part of a performance. It is a practice where software that generates music or visuals is written and manipulated as part of the performance. It emphasises the expressive possibilities afforded by programming languages as a means for defining and manipulating computational processes.
